Dutch Fabrics Provide Material for African Fashion

African fashion is on full display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A glorious display of colors, patterns, cuts and designs curated as part of an ongoing exhibit Vlisco: African Fashion on a Global Stage at the Philadelphia Music of Art.  The exhibition is part of a larger program called “Creative Africa”, which showcases and celebrates African art and design. Vlisco is the Dutch company that became one of the most influential textile brands in West and Central African fashion and a design inspiration around the world. Known for its bold and colorful patterns, Vlisco creates fabrics that merge tradition with luxury. The exhibition highlights the company’s classic and new designs, follows the creation of a textile, and showcases a selection of contemporary fashions by African and European makers as well as Vlisco’s in-house design team. The company, founded in 1846, features amazing wax printed textiles that have been a mainstay in western Africa for since the turn of the 20th century.
